- Raised intraocular pressure is the main risk factor.
- Family history: close relative (father, mother, brother, sister) or a more distant relatives (grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins).
- The ethnic origin: on people with darker skin and Asians glaucoma is more frequent, more severe and more difficult to treat.
- Myopia multiplies the risk of glaucoma.
- Vascular factors like migraine or arterial hypotension (low blood pressure).
- Corticosteroid intake by any route.
- Ingestion of large quantities of fluids like beer or coffee raise the intraocular pressure in a transient manner.
- Television or working in front of a computer are not responsible for glaucoma.
- There is no food or vitamin that is known to prevent or delay glaucoma.
